Kana Guide & FAQ: Understanding the Sounds
Everything you need to know about Gojūon (五十音), Dakuon (濁音), Handakuon (半濁音), Yōon (拗音), Sokuon (促音), and Chōonpu (長音符).
🔍
🎌
Gojūon (五十音) — The 50 Base Sounds
五 (Five) + 十 (Ten) + 音 (Sounds) = "Fifty Sounds"
Foundation
Gojūon is the traditional table of standard Japanese syllables arranged in a 5 × 10 grid. It matches 5 pure vowels (a, i, u, e, o) across 10 consonant rows (k, s, t, n, h, m, y, r, w, plus the standalone nasal n).
Primary Vowel Line:
ア (a) • イ (i) • ウ (u) • エ (e) • オ (o)
💡 Why are there only 46 characters instead of 50?
Over the centuries, redundant sounds like yi, ye, and wu merged into simple vowels, leaving 46 active baseline characters in modern Katakana and Hiragana.
🔊
Dakuon (濁音) — Voiced Sounds (Ten-Ten ゛)
濁 (Turbid/Muddy) + 音 (Sound) = Voiced Syllables
20 Sounds
Dakuon are "voiced" sounds made by vibrating your vocal cords. They are written by attaching two small slanted strokes called a Dakuten (濁点), colloquially known as ten-ten (点々), to the top-right corner of a kana character.
K-row ➔ G-row:カ (ka) ➔ ガ (ga)
S-row ➔ Z/J-row:サ (sa) ➔ ザ (za)
T-row ➔ D-row:タ (ta) ➔ ダ (da)
H-row ➔ B-row:ハ (ha) ➔ バ (ba)
🎯 Vocal Cord Trick: Place two fingers gently on your throat. Say "KA" (no throat vibration at the start), then say "GA" (throat vibrates immediately). That throat buzz is the ten-ten!
Handakuon converts the airy "H" consonant row into crisp, popping "P" sounds. It is created by placing a tiny circle mark called a Handakuten (半濁点), colloquially known as maru (丸 = circle), in the upper right.
The 5 Handakuon syllables:
パ (pa) • ピ (pi) • プ (pu) • ペ (pe) • ポ (po)
🎈 Memory Hook: The circular maru゜ looks like a soap bubble about to POP (P-sound).
🔀
Yōon (拗音) — Contracted Combo Sounds
拗 (Twisted/Bent) + 音 (Sound) = 1-Beat Glides
36+ Combos
Yōon are contracted syllables created by pairing an [ i ]-vowel character (ki, shi, chi, ni, hi, mi, ri, gi, ji, bi, pi) with a miniature Ya, Yu, or Yo (ャ, ュ, ョ in Katakana; ゃ, ゅ, ょ in Hiragana).
Sokuon is represented by a miniature character ッ (っ in Hiragana). It is not pronounced as "tsu"; instead, it acts as a brief pause or breath-catch that doubles the upcoming consonant.
ベッド(be-d-do) = Bed
カップ(ka-p-pu) = Cup
〰️
Chōonpu (長音符) — Long Vowel Mark (ー)
長 (Long) + 音 (Sound) + 符 (Mark) = Elongated Vowel
Katakana Essential
In Katakana, when a vowel is held for two beats (like in "coffee" or "cake"), it is extended using the horizontal dash ー. In vertical text, this bar is written vertically (丨).
Special Modern Kana for English & Foreign Phonetics
Modern Japanese
Native Japanese lacks sounds like "F", "V", "TI", and "DI". To preserve accurate foreign pronunciations, modern Japanese created extended Katakana pairs using full letters combined with miniature vowels (ァ, ィ, ゥ, ェ, ォ).
ファ・フィ・フェ・フォ
fa, fi, fe, fo
ティ・ディ
ti (party), di (disk)
ウィ・ウェ・ウォ
wi (wiki), we (web)
ヴァ・ヴィ・ヴ・ヴェ

When is Katakana used vs. Hiragana vs. Kanji?
The 3 Pillars of Japanese Writing
Big Picture
カタカナ (Katakana)
Sharp & angular. Used for loanwords (ホテル hotel), foreign names (アメリカ America), onomatopoeia, animal taxonomy, and visual emphasis.
ひらがな (Hiragana)
Soft & curvy. Used for native grammar particles (は, を, に, が), verb endings (食べる), and everyday native words.
漢字 (Kanji)
Chinese logographic ideograms. Represents the core meaning of nouns, verbs, and adjectives (e.g. 日本 Japan, 車 car, 食べる eat).
